1. SWAT - With a huge win against rival Titans, SWAT captures the top spot in our latest power rankings. This team is full of talent and at the top of their game. Their deadly backcourt is shooting lights out. Anchored by consistent bigman Farhad and Cire, this team has all the right pieces to go for the gold. Captain Ahmad has definitely retooled this year. Skeptics say their easy early schedule was key in their early success, but the teams they have faced include Ballers, Warriors and Titans. All whom have a winning record. Lets see if they can keep it up against tougher competition like Rukus and High Rizerz or collapse like they have in the past.
2. Rukus - A 2 point loss due to a last minute shot is the only thing standing between Rukus and an undefeated season. This team was scary last year, and now look even scarier. The Begawala brothers along with Bravo and Shehan look impossible to beat at this point. They are beating teams at will and arent looking back. Doesn't hurt to have big man Mir in the paint as well. They have all the right pieces and made it to the championship game last year. Looks like they may be on that road once again.
3. High Rizerz - With a huge win over the Ballers, the High Rizerz are looking great. Winning 4 straight after their first game loss to Rukus, this team looks to have the best chemistry in the league. With players like Rahul and Vish who can play multiple positions, they look to confuse team defenses and attack. One of the most consistent teams in the league, the High Rizerz are definitely a force to be reckoned with. Their schedule only gets easier as they have already beaten teams like HUMANS and Strong Island. Look for this team to be at the top.
4. Titans - Although they lost a tough one to SWAT, the Titans are still amongst the leagues best. They owned a 12 point lead over SWAT at one point but failed to hold on. A couple of bounces here and there, and the outcome of the game may have been completely different. Although battling a back injury, Tom Job is still the leagues most deadly shooter and is surrounded by quality players. Like the High Rizerz, the Titans are one of the most consistent teams in the SABL. They feature a different players each week it seems and have the chemistry to go deep into the playoffs. History has shown that the Titans move it up a notch come playoff time. We will have to see what Rex and Co. have in store for us in the coming weeks. But dont look for this team at the bottom. They are moving up.
5. Ballers - Just like in 2009, the Ballers have been losing games because of attendance. Nonetheless, this team still finds themselves with a winning record. One thing is for sure, they play their hearts out. This team is definitely a playoff contender as long as Manjot and Joe are in the backcourt and it is still way too early to count them out of being a championship contender. This team will eventually find its groove and will blow us away. Not one of their losses comes from lack of effort. Once they get a solid 5 that can make each and every game, they will begin to rack up the wins. They have one of the harder schedules to deal with as well and it will get easier from hear on out. Look for the Ballers to keep it going and be a sleeper team.
6. HUMANS - My how the champs have fallen. Earlier in the season we said to be the best you have to beat the best. And my how the best has been beaten. Losers of 3 straight, the HUMANS find themselves under .500 for the first time this season. But we all need to look back to last year and compare the teams. They return most of their players from last season when they finished as the 8th seed. Somehow they managed to get through it and win their second championship. We wouldn't be too alarmed with the HUMANS recent losing streak. History shows they can overcome all odds to become a champion. As long as their core attends their games and plays as they usually play, they will have nothing at all to worry about.
7. NYC Warriors - After their first game loss to the HUMANS, the league was pretty much ready to count these guys out. A few key acquisitions have helped the Warriors win 2 out of their last 3 games and are right in the thick of things. The early schedule was made up of winning teams and it should only get easier from here on out. With the team gelling now and getting accustomed to the SABL, the Warriors are definitely an upset special waiting to happen. They can easily get into the playoffs and make some noise. They have the right tools now and the chemistry is flowing, one good game by them can really cause alot of commotion in the standings. Watch out for the Warriors in the coming weeks.
8. Panthers - 5 games into the season, and we still havent figured out this teams identity. They looked real good early with a big win against Strong Island, but dropped a few games in a row and ended up coming up big against STYL this past Sunday. This team has the talent, but something is missing. If they want any shot at the playoffs, they better start looking for it now. They are still very close and a few more games like this past Sunday, and the Panthers find themselves right in the thick of things.
9. Strong Island - Never in their storied SABL career has the Strong Island franchise started the season 0 - 5. This team has been one of the elite since day one and went through some troubling times early in the season. Captain Sim has retooled however and they look really good. Tough to say that about an 0 - 5 team, but we do not think Strong Island will keep losing. Addition of Vick and Mo have really helped this team and they are going nowhere but up from here on out. Some experts even say that SI will make the playoffs after an 0 - 5 start. Lets see if they can make it happen, but only time will tell.
10. STYL - Not much to say here for STYL. This team dominated the East last season and looked like they were ready to take on the West. But they have not been able to find their first Win of the season yet. Attendance is key for them as the Jacob brothers have not been able to play and Davis has missed a few games as well. Stanley is trying as much as he can to lead his team in the right direction, but he needs help. The rest of the team need to muster of the energy and drive to start winning some games. Halfway through the season they look to be out of contention. But as well all know, anything is possible and a few huge wins can get them right back into it.

1. Lions (3-1 L1) - Quietly the Lions have crept their way up to the top spot in this week’s Power Rankings. With wins over Force, Desert Eagles, and the Ravens, the Lions established themselves
as the team to beat, but last week’s loss to the Red Jaguars keeps them out of sole possession of first place. With the acquisition of elite defender Shaun Ramani from Strong Island,
the team has adopted a new defensive attitude, something it lacked last season. This new attitude was most prevalent in their win over the Ravens two week ago, where they held a team that scored 90 points the week before to only 47. With team defense such as that, and the guard-big man combo of Shaun and Simran, the Lions have identified themselves as one of the teams to beat and will have to once again prove it against the defending champs in week 5 in a classic matchup of size vs. speed.
2. Ravens (3-1 W1) - Despite losing to the Lions, the Ravens see a rise in this week’s Power Rankings. Since their move to the East, this team has proved that it belongs atop the contending teams in the conference. The Ravens proved a lot with their win over the defending champs in Week 2. Not only did the team have the fortitude to come back from a 20+ point deficit. They were able to hold off Jeff and 24 seven in overtime to grab a win out of the jaws of defeat. Led by the consistent scoring of Biju Thomas and the stellar point guard play of Koshy, the Ravens look to continue their balanced team attack and take over the top spot in the East. Last week’s win over Force, moves them into a three way tie for first, and a date with Adrenaline in week 5.
3. Adrenaline (3-1 W3)- A youthful Adrenaline squad finds itself at #3 in this week’s Power Rankings. Two weeks ago, this team handed the A-Team their first ever loss in SABL. Down by 14 at halftime, Adrenaline was able to make it two in a row largely due to the leadership of SABL vet Khuram. Combine that with the young pieces around him, and Adrenaline is all of a sudden a dangerous team in the East. And then last week, this team put together the most lopsided victory of either conference this year. Adrenaline opened the game on a 30-4 run, and held a potent Desert Eagles offense to 8 first half points. Leading by as many as 45 points in the second half, Adrenaline quite literally ran away with a 30 point win. This team has put together three impressive wins in a row, and it seems as if their best games are still yet to come. They face their toughest challenge yet in week 5 against a veteran Ravens squad.
4. 24 Seven (2-2 W1)- The defending champs found themselves in unfamiliar territory over the past few weeks. Having lost back to back games to the Ravens and the D’Eagles, this team was hungry for a win, and they proved it by running through a formidable A-Team. If this team can buckle down and play some defense, the scoring of Jeff and Yassine should be more than enough for this team to put together a string of W’s. But with Mahdi no longer lurking in the paint for this team, can they play the same type of suffocating defense that won them the championship last year? Or will they have to rely on scoring 80-plus points per game in order to win? One thing is for sure, this team can score. The versatility of Jeff and Yassine has proven to be extremely difficult to stop. We’ll see if these guys can make it two in a row against the Lions next week.
5. A-Team (2-2 L2)- After starting out the season 2-0, the A-Team suddenly finds itself sitting at .500 with two straight losses to Adrenaline and 24 Seven. Up by 14 against Adrenaline at halftime two weeks ago, A-Team saw its lead slowly slip away as Adrenaline’s fast paced offense proved to be too much for them to handle. Than last week, 24 Seven who are known for their lightning fast transition game ran A-Team out of the building. One thing is for sure, Captain Muzz is counting down the days to the return of his big man Josh, but has the rest of the East conference figured out SABL’s newest expansion team? A-Team needs to hash out a plan to stop the Run N Gun style or this team is in danger of falling below .500, something that no one expected to happen. Let’s see if this team can pull together in week 5 against a newly revived Red Jaguars team.
6. Red Jaguars (2-2 W2)- With a win over Force two weeks ago, the Jaguars finally got the monkey off their back. Even after falling behind by double digits for the third straight week, the Jags scraped their way back into the game to upset a feisty Force team. The addition of Dennis gives this team a go to scorer, something they have lacked since the departure of Arif “Manu” Husain. Dennis’s scoring helped last week when his 20 point performance helped the Jaguars tame a heavily favored Lions team. With the team now having won two in a row, and the likes of Bijo, Khuram, and Sukhjinder helping out Dennis, the Jaguars now have a team capable of winning on any given day. Can the suddenly threatening Red Jaguars make it two in a row against a struggling A-Team in week 5?
7. Desert Eagles (1-3 L1)- The D’Eagles made some noise with their first win of the year. Paced by the offense of Harvey and the defense of Walid, the Desert Eagles have been able to navigate through a tough opening schedule. A solid win over 24 Seven had everyone believing that the Desert Eagles were serious contenders, but a poor performance against Adrenaline last week has stopped any momentum the Eagles built with their first in its tracks. One thing is for sure, Walid cannot carry this team on his own, players like Harvey and Hasim need to bring it night in and night out, or this team will continue to suffer fall deeper into the hole. Now at 1-3, the Desert Eagles will look to get back on track against a winless Force team; a loss here will be devastating to once dangerous Desert Eagles squad.
8. Force (0-4 L4)- It’s always tough being the only winless team left, but Force really can’t blame anyone but themselves. This team has had the lead late in every game, but in every game has given up a monstrous run to lose. If Force can keep their heads in the game for a full 40 minutes, they could be 2-2, but until they do that, don’t expect them to win many games. To make matters worse, week 4 pitted them against a veteran Ravens team. The loss makes it four in a row, and the pressure to win that first game has to be setting in for Prince and his team who look to end their misfortunes against a Desert Eagles team coming off an embarrassing loss. |
