SABL Western Conference Week 8 Recap

Storm vs. Ballers
The day kicked off with an amazing matchup.  Ballers found themselves up 25 late in the first half and looked to walk away with an easy win.  They were led by an amazing effort by Suleman Tariq who continues to be one of the leagues most under appreciated players.  Game in and game out he leads his team with his defense first mentality and it showed this game.  Storm on the other hand were able to finally showcase a full squad led by Ming and Mike McDuffie.  The two combined for 50 of their total points.  Sim chipped in with 14 as well and helped cut down the 25 point halftime lead only to come up short with a last second hail mary from halfcourt by Mike McDuffie.  Some say he was fouled on the play and should have went to the line to shoot 3 and presumably win the game for Storm.  But the whistles were silent and Ballers walked away with a huge win that will most likely have playoff implications.  Ballers over Storm 75-74.

SWAT vs. Hi Rizerz
The game of the week did not disappoint.  2 teams that have a long standing history finally meet.  SWAT knocked HR out of the playoffs last year and sent reigning MVP Rahul packing early.  HR is on a tear this year and boasts one of the leagues most talented teams at every position.  This was redemption in their eyes, but SWAT had a different story to tell.  The game started with SWAT knocking down 3 after 3, and Reyaad with 7 3's himself.  SWAT, without Usama, was up 13 at half and was looking to cruise through this one easily.  But one thing is for sure, dont sleep on HR.  They started the second half with 4 consecutive fast break baskets led by Vish and Vick and cut down the lead.  Rahul was out of it this game and couldnt find his groove.  But his team picked it up and Vick led the way and was unstoppable in the paint literally getting any basket he wanted.  Game was tied late in the second half until SWAT hit a few clutch free throws and one key defensive stop by Farhad helped them keep Ivan Lynch out of the paint and lock this game up.  SWAT sneak by in a VERY entertaining game and leave HR wondering what happened.  SWAT wins 76-74.

Panthers vs. 7th Letter Entertainment / Tic Tavern
One of the more lopsided games of the day happened quite early and was a bit of a surprise to everyone.  Seemed like everyone was building on the momentum that 7th Letter had and expected a bigger game out of them.  With so much lying on their next few games and the possibility of being eliminated from the playoffs, 7th Letter had alot to lose.  But the Panthers were not open for feeling bad for them.  One of the deepest teams in the league had great outing and simply dominated 7th Letter.  Known as a very inconsistent team, the Panthers have been showing some power lately and have been winning by more than 20+ points in their last 2 games (vs. Storm and 7th Letter).  Powered by rookie sensation Jamal Razaki and the tough play of Sammie, this team is gelling at the right time and were able to take advantage of 7th Letter.  Look out for the Panthers as they look to be the real deal now.  Panthers win BIG 72-48.

NYC Warriors vs. Titans
Looks like the Giants got the best of the Titans.  They played with 4 this game and were able to give NYC Warriors the easy win.  A win is a win and now Haron and Co. are looking at a possible playoff seed with the 7th Letter Entertainment loss.  Going to be an interesting next few weeks to see if they can capitalize and take advantage of this good fortune.  Not to discredit the Warriors, but a win like this can really get the gears going.  Titans on the other hand are still in prime position, however their potential seeding might have shifted.  Next few weeks will be interesting for them as well if they want to avoid a first round matchup with SWAT or Storm.

RUKUS vs. Astoria Bulls
Another game plagued by the Giants game.  This matchup saw 2 very thin lineups as they were missing key pieces.  But RUKUS still had their MVP candidate Mike Bravo on hand and he had a record breaking performance.  Mike Bravo was able to drop 60 points in this matchup and now holds the single game scoring record in SABL history.  A record that was broken earlier this year with the 56 point performance by Haron Hargrave of the Warriors.  Amazing to see the same record broken twice in one year.  Some may discredit this outing as it was against a weak Astoria Bulls team, but the record still stands.  Defense is defense and the Bulls were playing for a playoff spot.  Bravo is solidifying himself as a leader for the MVP candidacy and now holds a prestigous SABL record as well.  Hats off to him for this performance.  Bulls on the other hand will need to win out the rest of the season if they want a chance at the playoffs.  Lets cheer them on because for anyone who has seen them play, they have more effort than one can imagine.  RUKUS wins big!

24/7 vs Desert Eagles

Bingo! To start off this Sunday we have the top two teams from our Power Rankings squaring off in a matinee special. We cannot say enough about this game – this is potentially the game of the year! Anything and everything is worth mentioning, as the power starting lineups of both teams have been well-documented in our past analysis. Perhaps what is most interesting about this matchup is the similarities in athleticism but difference in style between the teams. 24/7 is a run and gun offense that is not afraid to execute in the halfcourt set. The Desert Eagles are halfcourt-execution professionals with the athleticism to have Walid and Harvey run the fast break every now and then. The entire league will be focused on the Desert Eagles defensive approach towards beheading 24/7. Just perhaps we will get a good glimpse on how to guard 24/7 successfully. We expect to see Harvey doing his best to shadow Yassine, which should be phenomenal to watch, Kaashif on Mohamed, and Farhan and Adam alternating on Jon Roman. What will be interesting to see is how the Desert Eagles use Walid. Do they cover him on Jeff or do they rely on his for rebounds? Keep in mind that Walid is coming off of a 33 point, and even more impressive, a 19 rebound effort against the Red Jags. If they don’t put Walid on Jeff, who stops Jeff? The possibilities are endless. On offense, we expect the Desert Eagles to get their points while grinding it out as usual. Perhaps the biggest factor working against the Desert Eagles will be fatigue. Can they give 110% on defense and have enough to finish the deal on offense with a thin bench? Traditional logic says no. On the flip side, 24/7 is coming off a convincing win against the A-Team in a rematch of last year’s Finals. Something worth mentioning is that 24/7’s blowout games come against seemingly good competition, which begs the question – does 24/7 play to their opponents level? If that is the case, the Desert Eagles are in for a long afternoon. Prediction: 24/7 over the Desert Eagles 63 to 54.

Primetime vs Wolverines

If there has been any team that has embodied inconsistency, it has been Primetime. The last three weeks have been enough proof: Week 5 they get blown out by the Desert Eagles, Week 6 they trash the Force, Week 7 they lose to a slumping Outlaws team. Meanwhile in our opinion, the Wolverines have been steadily rising an elite team in the East. Two close losses to 24/7 and the Desert Eagles and two handy defeats of the Red Jags and the Force in their last 4 weeks have raised some eyebrows. We will be interested in how Primetime chooses to guard Alain Wehder. The word around the league is that he is containable, but no team has yet accomplished it. 24/7 and the Desert Eagles have done the best job in containing him, and the results speak for themselves – both teams beat the Wolverines! There lies a possibility that Khuram Shahzad might use his athleticism to guard Alain for stretches in the game. One thing for certain – for the Wolverines to succeed, Alain will have to rely on his shot as Primetime boasts the best pain defense in the league with Khuram and Stanley anchoring their defense. Shergeel Salim’s continual improvement will be key towards the Wolverines finding a way to win. For Primetime, they will need to find someone to consistently back up Khuram offensively and earn his trust. Niraj Ghai and the rest of the supporting cast is coming off a disappointing game against the Outlaws. They should rebound well against the Wolverines. Nonetheless, we expect the Wolverines to take this one 69 to 60.

A-Team vs Force

Tale of 2 stories.  A-Team came into the season with strong hopes but find themselves in the bottom of the barrel.  Tough losses to some of the top teams and a roster that never shows up makes it hard for them to swallow.  Josh Frazier has done what he can to keep the A-Team competitive, but they have not been able to captilize.  With playoffs fast approaching, this crew better get their heads straight and make sure they can pull off some upsets.  Force on the other hand started the season off very well and came in with a new look.  But with the improved talent in the East, their changes were not big enough.  Joe Fitt is likely gone for them and they are looking for ways to win games.  At this point, we can expect for these two teams to finish where they currently stand unless something drastic changes in the next few weeks.  They both have a shot to move up a spot or two and avoid playing 24/7 in the first round of playoffs, interesting to see who it will be.  Experts are predicting Force steps up to the plate in a big game 58 to 52.

Outlawz vs Red Jaguars

In the Outlaws successfully ending their losing streak last week against Primetime, they showed what grit and toughness they have. For those who watched the game, it wasn’t a pretty victory but they got the job done. Siju Lukose broke out with 14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and Tobin Varghese’s steady scoring was able to seal the deal. Nikil Khuram’s presence was limited by the stealth paint defense of Primetime. The entire league knows of the prowess of Tobin and Nikil, but it seems like every elite team in the East has a legitimate 3rd option to rely on at times. Who will that be for the Outlaws? Will it be Siju Lukose, Joel Enai, or Love Constant? This will be an interesting to see. The Red Jags are coming of a near victory against the Desert Eagles. If any loss can be viewed at with a silver lining, perhaps this one is it. One thing we have noticed is that Red Jags big-man Ceon Stuart has had a huge target on his back all season, both from referees and from opposing players. It has resulted in numerous technicals and the threat of suspension. Perhaps the Red Jags need to limit his minutes or have him come off the bench. However, he should have a relatively easy time scoring the basketball against the Outlaws, as they do not have the height to match up with him. Also of interesting is how the Outlaws will guard point guard Dennis. When Dennis is contained, the Red Jags seem to be lifeless. The team’s Week 4 meeting showed the Red Jaguars coming away with a 60-53 victory, which was the start of a three game slump for the Outlaws. Now the Red Jags are on a three game slump of their own, with losses to the Wolverines, A-Team, and the Desert Eagle. In a battle of mid-level teams in the East, we expect this one to be a close one. The Outlaws pull this one out 63 – 61.

Ballers vs. Storm
Battle of 2 teams that showed so much promise this pre-season.  Noone can forget the early season interview with Ballers captain Talha as he told the rest of the league to watch out for his team.  But didn't seem to pan out that way.  Ballers have 2-3 in their last 5 and cannot exchange wins for losses if they want to head into the playoffs with full steam.  Doesn't seem like Joe Pena is returning to the team this year so its up to Manjot, Gavin and Suleman to carry the load.  Individually, these guys can flat out ball.  But they need to put it together consistently to break through.  Storm is very similar, however their attendance has been killing them.  On paper, and with the acquisition of Ming, these guys look scary.  But they have yet to show up to a game with a full squad and its hurting them bad.  They need this huge win over the Ballers to make some headway into the playoffs or they will be sitting back questioning what happened to their stellar season.  Experts predict Ballers will take this one in a close game 73-70.

SWAT vs. Hi Rizerz
Two teams going in two different directions.  Last season these 2 teams were on the same pace and ended up meeting at around the same time.  Hi Rizerz came up victorious in a huge game 5 point win that included Rahul going off for 27 points.  The 2 teams met in the playoffs later that year and HR was trampled in an 11 point loss and their number #1 seed went to waste.  Will this matchup follow the same road?  Will HR beat SWAT only to be bounced out the playoffs a few weeks later?  One thing is for sure, SWAT is not playing SWAT ball.  Even with a full squad last week, they were hammered by RUKUS.  HR has been tested the past few weeks as well but have gutted out the wins and remain with 1 loss.  Its unfortunate to say we believe history will repeat itself.  Until SWAT finds their groove, dont look for them to knock off HR in an easy game.  Experts predict  HR to take it in a very entertaining game 81 - 76.

Panthers vs. 7th Letter Entertainment / Tic Tavern
If 7th Letter learned one thing last week, its to just play ball.  Losing Carl because of techs hurt them bad as they needed a big win against the Ballers to stake their claim. But losing their biggest piece ended hurting them and may have an impact come playoff time.  If they want to make up for it, they will need to get it together and come up with a win against the Panthers.  The Panthers are rolling right now and are playing great basketball.  Their depth is key and they are always using fresh legs.  Look for a big matchup on the inside with Carl vs. Sammie.  The 2 can bang with the best of them and this one will be an all out war.  One thing to mention is that both teams are playing great defense as well ranking 4th and 5th, so the dont look for a high score.  It will come down to who can shut down the other team.  Guard play will be big and we think the difference maker will be Jamal of the Panthers.  He wont be stopped and will carry his team to a win.  Experts predict Panthers win 66-57.

Titans vs. NYC Warriors
Sad to see such a talent not make the playoffs.  But even with such amazing play by Haron, Warriors find themselves at 2-5 and 1 spot out of the final playoff spot.  They will need a huge win against the Titans and a loss by 7th Letter to move up a spot.  Titans on the other hand are cruising right now.  They were somewhat tested last week against the Astoria Bulls and played very uncharacteristically.  But the little scare may have showed the Titans they are not immortals, but just Titans.  Look for them to build on that performance and display the amazing teamwork they have been showing the league the past few months.  Their interior defense will clog the lanes and limit Haron to the backcourt, where he is equally as dangerous.  As long as they contain the rest of the Warriors, teams have learned they can let Haron go off and still get away with a win.  Lets see if the Warriors can muster the energy to win this one.  But experts predict a big win by the Titans 74 - 62.

Astoria Bulls vs. RUKUS
Not much to say here.  Although the Bulls played brilliant ball last week against the Titans, they were unable to close the game out.  RUKUS is flat out scary right now.  They are coming off of an impressive win against SWAT that left them clueless. This week game should be no problem and we are predicting a complete lopsided win by RUKUS.  The only thing that is possible is if their team decides to watch the Giant game and they send the reserves.  But with talks of the MVP race brewing, look for Mike Bravo to have a big game and use this matchup to pad his stats.  More importantly, RUKUS will look to take the number #1 spot with a win and if SWAT can beat Hi Rizerz in the same day.  Might be a very interesting game to watch.  But experts predict RUKUS win big 94-70.

 Hi Rizerz vs. NYC Warriors

What a battle.  As everyone expected, HR and the Warrors went down to the wire in this game.  Haron proved he is the real deal once again by taking the game over and preventing the Hi Rizerz to gain a comfortable lead.  This is now the third time in four weeks HR has been tested.  Is this the same team that was so dominant early in the season?  In their favor, Jassi and Ditar were MIA which affects the game hugely.  But in the end, a win is a win.  HR although not as deep as usual, was able to hold off the Warriors for a win.  They are now solidifying themselves as the #1 team come playoff time, very similar to last year.  Lets hope they dont hope for an early exit.  NYC Warriors on the other hand will need to really push for some last minute momentum if they want to steal the #8 spot in the standings.  It will be tough, but the team has to figure out a way to help Haron.  HR wins in a close one 77 - 75.

Panthers vs. Storm
One thing is certain after this game, Mike McDuffie is a difference maker and his absence was felt this game.  The every so inconsistent Panther were able to

manhandle Storm during this game.  Huge game by Sammie Exantus as he dropped 33 points.  The rest of the army of Panthers all chipped in to help solidify this win.  Storm on the other hand was led by Andy with 21 of his own points.  The question remains, will Storm be able to field a team for the playoffs?  Where is Ming?  There was so much talk about his mid-season signing after Strong Island dropped out.  But he has not been able to help Storm out.  With a full squad, they are sure to make some noise, but for now they are struggling to get the pieces together.  Going to be interesting the next few weeks to see how this team fairs.  Panthers win BIG 85 - 65.

SWAT vs. RUKUS

The finals rematch. This was definitely the game of the week and it did not disappoint.  Glad to see that tons of fans were in attendance to see these 2 teams battle it out.  This game was a tale of 2 halves.  The first half was very evenly matched, with Mike Bravo leading the way for RUKUS and draining 3 after 3.  SWAT was unable to really find a groove but their depth at every position kept them into the game.  Their lack of defense crept up on them in the second half as RUKUS was able to open up with a 10-2 run and grab offensive rebounds left and right.  Mahdi took advantage of his length and was instrumental in RUKUS' second half assault.  Reyaad and co. tried to make a late game rush and caused some timely turnovers with their full court press, but it wasnt enough as RUKUS walks away the victor in this one.  Going to be interesting if these 2 teams meet again in the finals.  There is a competitive spirit these 2 teams have that embody the SABL and its amazing to watch.  RUKUS wins 93 - 81.

Astoria Bulls vs. Titans

For the fans that stayed and watched this one, it looked like the Bulls were on their way to their first SABL win.  They were dominating most of the game and even found themselves up by 8 at one point.  The game was literally decided in the last 5 minutes of the second half.  Tom Job carried the load for his team as he drained a game high 5 3 pointers.  The rest of the team contributed as they usually did and was led by Daniel Chin and his excellent court vision.  The Bulls on the other hand show a lot of promise.  They have a hustle and heart that many teams lack.  Seems like this group will have a very bright future ahead of them.  Big man Enes brings you back to the days of the early 90's in the NBA with his post moves and big man play as he dropped another double-double. Best part about this team is they are young and hungry.  And that can get you places.  This game didnt go their way but showed they can play with the best of them.  Titans are solidifying themselves as the real deal and show that any of their players can carry the load any different week.  Titans win 72 - 63.

Ballers vs. 7th Letter Entertainment / Tic Tavern

The closing game turned out to be a very competitive game that went south for 7th Letter.  They were coming off a 2 game winning streak and needed this big win against the Ballers.  The game will most likely have an effect come playoff time seeding and was taken very seriously by both teams.  7th Letter have not seen a team like the Ballers yet in the SABL.  Ballers take pride in their defense and penetration, and it was evident in this game.  Suleman and Manjot were able to get to the basket while causing havoc on the defensive end.  Carl Lee of 7th Letter was on his way to a monster game before being ejected for cursing.  If he had not been ejected, the outcome may have been very different.  Goes to show how important 1 player can be for his team.  But not to discredit the Ballers, they showed up when they had to and locked up a very important game.  This might be the start of their mini win streak before we head into playoff time.  Ballers win 64 - 54.

24/7 vs. A-Team
It took only half a season, but SABL fans will treated to the dream rematch from the 2010-11 finals. Since the legendary finals game, both teams have made contrasting headlines. 24/7 has been the buzz of the East and are looking to make South Asian Sports history by accomplishing the first three-peat ever! To contrast, the A-Team has dealt with early season struggles and are currently on the bottom of the latest power rankings. But don’t let the rankings fool you – the A-Team is one big-time upset away from instantly injecting themselves into the elite of the East. The A-Team matches up well against 24/7 – their strength, a superstar center, has the potential to exploit 24/7s only known weakness. One can only image how hungry the A-Team and their star Josh Frazier will be after being runner-up in the championship and the MVP race last year. However, will they be able to contain the sheer superpower of 24/7? Traditional logic says no. However, 24/7 has one glaring question to answer – how will they contain Josh Frazier? Only time will tell the answers to both. Look for Rudy Rana vs Jon Roman to be a great matchup to watch. Sooner or later, we are expecting 24/7 to stumble and lose one game. Will tomorrow be their lapse? We don’t think so. Prediction – a thrilling nail-biter with 24/7 pulling through 74 – 70.

Outlaws vs. Primetime
A marquee match between two rookie powerhouses will be sure to keep SABL fans amped up all afternoon. Latest power rankings have this being a matchup between the #3 ranked team vs the #4 ranked team. This game will be a matchup of adrenaline, athleticism, and hustle. Last game, we witnessed the greatest reversal of fortunes from week-to-week with Primetimes 63 point turnaround. Will the extended break slow down Primetime’s newly discovered momentum? One thing for sure: Primetime’s interior presence of Khuram Shahzad and Stanley Thomas will create all kinds of problems for the Outlaws offense in that they will limit second-chance points by Nikil Kumar and company. Often this season, the Outlaws live and die on the wrists of Tobin Varghese. To beat Primetime, Tobin will have to shoot lights-out from the three point line all night. Being the Outlaws most athletic player, he will likely have to step up and guard Khuram Shahzad. Will he have enough gas in the tank to carry such a huge load? We will see. Experts think it’s too much to ask for one person. Prediction – Primetime 67, Outlaws 60.

Wolverines vs. Force
The entire league is wondering one thing – where in the world is Joe Fitt? In half of the season, Joe has played in only two games, resulting in the two Force wins. Assuming Joe plays, the Force will still have their hands full all evening long. The Wolverines perimeter-associated offense neutralizes any interior advance that the Force may potentially have. The matchup to watch will be Shergill Saleem vs Royce Joesph. We expect Alain Wehder to have a breakout game – even by his own standards. Expect over 40 points and 10 assists by Alain, as he will be able to cut through the Force defense. It will be interesting to see if the combo of Jones and Alex can neutralize Alain. We also are expecting Biju Thomas to have a breakout and take advantage of the Wolverines poor perimeter defense. Prediction – Wolverines over Force 62 to 49.

Red Jaguars vs. Desert Eagles
In a game of two similar teams, execution will determine who comes out on top. Both teams are very concentrated and calculated in their offense. Each will take plenty of time off the shot clock while they mull the opposing defense for an opportunity to strike. In the first half of the season, the Desert Eagles have shown consistently that they play better team ball that any team. However, traditionally the Red Jaguars are a team that gets better in the second half of the season, while the same cannot be said of the Desert Eagles. Will the trend continue? The matchup to watch is Walid Hariki vs Sukhjinder Singh, as both these players are versatile all-rounders. Dennis will have his way on offense and the Desert Eagles may have to resort to putting Harvey on him at the end of the game. However if Kashif Chaudry plays point guard, whoever guards him from the Jags will be in for a long night. In the meantime Ceon Stuart will look to be a force on defense that changes every single. Experts predict that this will be where Ceon Stuart finds his niche and finds his primary role for the team. The Jags are unique in that they play a very similar style of offense to the Desert Eagles. Prediction – will be a low scoring thriller: Red Jags will pull off the upset 52 to 45.
