Analysis:
As expected, Styl and Strong Island advanced to the final four of the Eastern Playoffs. Styl got it on a no show by Triple Threat (I guess they were tired of getting blown out?) but Strong Island had to battle a bit against a feisty Force team. Although Force played them pretty close in the game, they were down by 20+ from the week before so in reality they were down close to 30 when all was said and done.
The Eagles and 24/7 game was a good one that went back and forth. Eagles actually took the lead by 8 points in the second half and looked to be cruising before they ran out of steam and began to make poor decisions. 24/7 turned up the pressure and their young legs were just too much for the Eagles. In the Lions vs. Adrenaline game, the Lions' star SG Raman went down early with an unfortunate injury and Lions couldn't recover. Adrenaline held onto their lead coming into the game and even built on it to end the game. We're looking at a final four of Styl vs. Adrenaline and 24/7 vs. Strong Island, as many predicted.

Analysis:
As the HUMANS' captain so eloquently put it: "What an upsetting week!"... You can't be surprised to see some upsets going on because the records of all these teams were not only so close, but the parity is just unprecedented. It's not just that the #7 HUMANS defeated the #2 MKA team, it's how dominant their performance was. It was a blowout. The bottom line was that MKA came out timid while the HUMANS treated it like a finals game. Then you have the #8 Hit-Men who knocked off the favored #1 Strictly Biz with a miracle finish. Biz were slightly short-handed but that's no excuse. Hit-Men hung around long enough to steal this one. The good news for MKA and SB is that they are still alive in this double-elimination playoff format.
#3 Rukus took it to #6 SWAT, who was missing their starting PG Reyyad. As usual with these two teams, little defense was being played and the NBA-looking score is evidence of that. Rukus' big guns were just too much for SWAT and Rukus' captain Muhammad lit it up with 5 three's. Likewise, #4 Titans easily dispatched #5 Strong Island. Strong Island's deep bench was nowhere to be found and you could say the same about their defense. Titans ran them out of the gym. The visual version of the brackets will be released tomorrow, but you should know that the Round Two match-ups will be: Hit-Men vs. Titans, RUKUS vs. HUMANS, SWAT vs. MKA, and Strictly Biz vs. Strong Island.
In the mini Tea Cup Tournament of the Twinkling Stars™, the 'Ballers abused the comatose Panthers and the Ravens, yes I said the Ravens(!), knocked off the hapless Jaguars. Panthers and Jaguars get to go fishing while the 'Ballers and Ravens will get to play one last game on the 28th for the ultimate supremacy and bragging rights or something.

Double Elimination in West |
|
Friday, 12 February 2010 |
By overwhelming demand, the West playoffs (which is set to begin this week) is changing from a "Best of Two" tournament to a "Double Elimination" tournament. The main difference here is that the teams will play different opponents each week and will be eliminated only after losing twice. The round one games and schedule are unchanged (check schedule page closely for game times and gyms!). The total number of games and weeks needed to complete the tournament isn't going to change, which is why we were even able to do this. The East playoffs will continue as "Best of Two". May the best teams win! For more information and diagrams of what the tournament will look like, check here.

Analysis:
The only movement in the standings resulting from this past weekends games was Rukus overtaking Titans for the #3 seed, which gets them a first-round date with SWAT, while Titans get to face Strong Island in what will be a rematch of last year's semi-finals between those two teams. For those who forgot, Titans prevailed last time around. The winner of Rukus (3) vs. SWAT (6) will play the winner of MKA (2) vs. HUMANS (7). Both of those series are expected to be highly competitive and while the higher seeds may be the favorites going in, any two of these four teams can realistically advance. Rukus' big three will be going up against SWAT's big four, and four is better than three, right? We'll see... HUMANS used their gym time wisely yesterday with a team practice to prepare some surprise sets for MKA. Watch out for the "Statue of Liberty" play!
The winner of Strictly Biz (1) vs. Hitmen (8) will get to play the winner of Titans (4) vs. Strong Island (5). The Titans and Strong Island match-up should be epic and in past years this would be a kind of match-up we'd expect to see in the finals or semis, not in the first round. Having to play two games in one day may tire Strong Island out in the long-run however, so that's definitely something to keep an eye on, but don't expect to hear them complain about it. It seems everyone has written the Hitmen off after their 2nd half slide, but with a full squad, they can hang with anyone. Don't forget that Triggy is the reigning MVP and Simran is still the biggest inside presence in the league. Don't discount these guys, but at the same time don't expect Strictly Biz to take them lightly.
Final Standings:
1. Strictly Biz (11-1)
2. MKA-NY (10-2)
3. Rukus (8-4)
4. Titans (7-5)
5. Strong Island (7-5)
6. SWAT (7-5)
7. HUMANS (8-4)
8. Hit-Men (5-7)
------------------------
9. Jaguars (3-8)
10. Basketballers (2-9)
11. Panthers (2-9)
12. Ravens (0-11)
