Latest update

We have spoken to the union and the following items were decided mutually between the SABL and the Referees Union.

Please reference this item in the players rule book that was given to each captain before the season began.

2. Conduct:
Good sportsmanship should be stressed at all times. Profanity will not be tolerated; guilty parties will be ejected from the game. League officials and/or game officials will have the power to eject a player or spectator and forfeit a game without warning for any conduct deemed unsportsman-like or detrimental to the game. Any participant verbally or physically assaulting an official will be automatically suspended for the current season and the incident may result in legal action. Threats to an official or City employee will result in multiple game suspensions. Comments such as "I will take care of you later"; or "I'll meet you in the parking lot" will be considered as threats and will be taken seriously. When players are listed on a team's roster it is understood that the team manager will notify them of all rules and regulations including the Sports Code of Conduct.

SABL offered to suspend the entire Warriors team in order to avoid any penalties and or fines that would be levied upon the league and perhaps some of its players.

The Referee who was targeted spoke out in defense of the Warriors. She cited Andrew and Abdullah as two people who stood out as "good guys". She felt that disbanding the team would not be beneficial to the league and would be punishing players who had nothing to do with the incident.

In reference to fining the league, the union head has assured us that he is going to make the suggestion to not fine the SABL. He mentioned that since a grievance has already been filed, that the union must investigate each incident and come up with a conclusion. He can not influence that conclusion he can only make a suggestion, his suggestion will be to not fine the SABL. He cited a quick response to the situation as well as certain players from the league coming to the quick aid and defense of the referees as the reason, plus the quick apologies and assurances from the SABL that the situation will be handled and remedied immediately.

He also mentioned that some times these things take on a life of their own, and that the condom incident is something that has never happened before to anyone before, and the comment that she took as being a racial comment is something that has never happened to them before either. If these items take on a life of their own and the union decides to make an example of the SABL, there is nothing that the union head can do. He can onlythen help us by capping the fine, which he said if it comes down to it he will do it. He will cap the fine at only $1,000.

A lot of what happens with the league is based on our performance in the future with the same referees, we have to be model citizens. Hopefully we have taken a step in the right direction, but we are not 100% out of the woods yet.

Suspensions

The Union and both referees specifically took exception to the behavior of two individuals in the league. They mentioned this after they strongly campaigned for the Warriors not to be asked to leave the SABL.

Sajed - will be suspended for the rest of the 2007 season, which includes the playoffs.
Nader will be suspended for the rest of the 2007 season, which includes the playoffs.
Waqas will get a 1 game suspension.
Lumi will get a 1 game suspension
Nasir will get a 1 game suspension
Fatesher will get a 1 game suspension
Abid will get a 2 game suspension
Andrew will not be suspended
Abdullah will not be suspended
Farooq will get a 1 game suspension

These suspensions start immediately and are effective the first game back from our break which is February 11th and onward. If a player is suspended they are not allowed to attend the games, they have to stay away from the gym.

As of this morning the Garden school has allowed the SABL to continue to use the premises, with a one strike and you are out policy. If we get loud and or obnixious we have to leave.

They mentioned that we have been acting like "thugs", when we pleaded that we are far from it etc..., they said well your league players have acted like "thugs" so you are considered thugs in our eyes. One last chance and that's it.

On the referee union front, they are investigating the incident and they will ask to interview players within the league. They are also going to make suggestions and reccomendations to us, they also will fine us. How much we don't know, at that point we can either pay or go to binding arbitration as per the terms of our agreement. We are awaiting word on how much the fine is and if they will return. If they do not return we are still obligated to pay the fine plus any lost wages, which means the remaining games, we still have to pay the referees the amounts owed. This is as per the terms of the agreement.

We have been speaking to the union representatives, as well as the two referees on hand at the time of the incident.

The league is looking in to players who are going to be suspended etc.. and submit this list to the referees union, once done they will make their decision.

The SABL is being sued by the Referees union due to harrassment. In particular the ugly incident at the end of the game, plus the situation where a condom was thrown in the direction of the female referee.

Obviously the SABL is asking anyone with further information to come forward. Currently we are looking at fines in excess of $1000.00.

All games going forward are postponed until further announcement.

We are negotiating with the referees union as well as the Garden School to continue the league.
