Week 5 Recaps
Wolverines vs Red Jaguars
SABL history has shown that shown that one player usually cannot win a game by himself. With all due respect to the rest of the Wolverines, it seems that Alain Wehder never got the history lesson! The Wolverines had a full lineup show up, and it was Alain in particular who delivered an MVP performance. 38 points, 6 threes, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds later, the Red Jaguars walked off the court dazed and confused. Alain’s 38 points is a season-high for points in a game for the East so far this season. The Wolverines ran pick-and-roll after pick-and-roll and Alain seemed to heat up exponentially as the game progressed. Raja Bhatt contributed a solid game as well with 9 points, 8 rebounds for the Wolverines. The Red Jaguars were led by new-comer Neal George with a very respectable stat line of 19 points, 5 threes, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocks. The loss for the Red Jags puts into serious question who is the number two team in the East. The Wolverines win in a shocker, 73-63.
24/7 vs Outlawz
The SABL East game of the week had an asterisk early on as half of the 24/7 four-headed-monster was affected by attendance/injury. All-Stars Jeff Snipoglesby was a no-show to the game and defending-MVP Jon Roman fell early to injury. Still, 24/7 managed to take care of business without too much of a scare. MVP candidates Mohamed Elfatihi and Yassine Rhaffor dominated the game offensively with 32 points each. Both were extremely aggressive all game – Mohamed with his seven three pointers and drives to the hoop, Yassine with his aggressive moves drawing fouls and his rebounding and play-making. Their combined 64 points is more than most teams average per game! 24/7 scored an SABL East season-high 94 points (shattering their own 81 points from last week) and both teams traded basket after basket. Credit the Outlaws for fighting until the end despite superstar Tobin Varghese having a cold shooting afternoon. The Outlawz were led by Nikil Kumar whose timely threes and offensive rebounds kept the Outlawz within striking distance at times. In the end, 24/7 triumphed in an offensive showdown 94-84.
Primetime vs Desert Eagles
For stretches of the game, the Desert Eagles can simply dominate which is a testament to their versatility and ability to adjust to the game! Take the 2nd half of their game versus Primetime as an example. After falling behind in the first half, they outscored PT 49 to 23 by forcing turnover after turnover and catching on fire from the three-pointer line. Walid, Farhan, and Harvey equally stepped up their defensive presence and shot-making in the 2nd half. In addition Primetime was not able limit their mistakes and neutralize the DE scoring runs, possibly due to a DNP by Stanley who sat this one out. Primetime was lead by Khuram, Salman, and Niraj. When all was said and done, theDesert Eagles prevailed over Primetime, 76 – 55. Experts were utterly wrong in their predictions again confirming one this is for sure: the East conference is deep and any game can go any way on any given Sunday!
A-Team vs Force
Joe Fitt, Royce, and Rahul from Force had the tough task of containing the A-Team frontline and did well, combining for an impressive 27 rebounds. They limited the A-Team from controlling the offensive glass, which was key to winning the game. The A-Team’s offense was anemic managing only 46 points. On the flipside, the Force executed a balanced offense. They were paced by Joe with 14 points, 10 boards, 4 blocks; Biju Thomas with 13 points; Alex with 13 points, 6 boards, 4 assists; and Jones with 10 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds. That resulted in a 60-46 win for the Force. The question on everyone’s mind is what’s going on with the A-Team? Captain Muzz and company have a history of starting the season slow and finishing strong, but even this has to be alarming. 46 points against a mediocre defense is not acceptable. On the flipside, the Force are looking tough when their enforcer Joe Fitt playing. A matchup against Primetime next week will be a great barometer as to where they stand. |
