Hi Rizerz vs. Panthers
What was supposed to be a lopsided win, turned out to be one of the most entertaining games in SABL history.  HR vs. Panthers was a delight to watch for the tons of fans that were in attendance.  The game was led mostly by the Panthers as rookie sensation Jamal Razaki and counterpart Sammie Ex were breaking down the defense of HR.  Late in the 4th quarter though, the reigning MVP Rahul Tahun showed everyone what he is still capable of doing.  Rahul did what he had to do and hit some big 3's to bring his team back to tie the game and lead into OT.  There the battle kept going as the 2 teams traded basket after basket.  What was interesting is that this game was not a high scoring affair.  It showed alot of heart and hustle on the defensive end which embodied the first OT.  Sooner than we know it, the game was into the second OT and the first game this season to go to 2 OT's!  A few key stops by HR and feeding Rahul the ball allowed HR to jump out to a quick 4 point lead.  Some timely turnovers late in the 2nd OT led to HR narrowly escaping defeat and beating the Panthers.  This is the third game in a row where HR was tested mightily. First game against RUKUS they just made it, second game against Ballers they were defeated, and third game took 2 OT's to win.  However you want to look at it, HR is showing some real heart.  But props to Panthers as they showed they can play with the best of them.  HR over Panthers 84 - 80.

SWAT vs. Ballers
Ballers were fresh off a huge win against #1 ranked Hi Rizerz and were ready to keep it going against the defending champs.  Its no news, the champs havent shown that dominance yet this season because of their inability to field a full squad each week.  But we know what they are capable of when everyone shows, so we arent quick to count them out.  This game started with 5 SWAT players in regular SWAT fashion and the Ballers had their prime pieces in Gavin and Manjot.  For those who seen this game in person, it was a special occasion. like captain Anwar from PrimeTime said "I would pay to watch these guys play".  Reyaad and Usama showed why they were still one of the leagues top backcourts as they put on a shooting spectacle, by dropping a total of 17 combined 3 pointers.  The first half was dominated by their excellent play and SWAT was up big.  Ballers though, like usual, found a way to get back into it with the amazing play of Suleman.  Suleman dropped a team high and was able to get to the basket at will.  He was able to get into the lane and SWAT couldnt find an answer for him.  The last few minutes of the game SWAT was able to make a few key stops and hold off the Ballers, but this game was so close it could have gone either way.  SWAT wins in a high scoring affair 100 - 95.

Titans vs. 7th Letter Entertainment / Tic Tavern
Titans have been on a role lately because of the solid play from Anil and Daniel Chin.  Not sure if anyone would have thought they would come out on the losing end against a 1-4 7th Letter Entertainment team.  But unfortunately, they did.  7th Letter has showed some promise against the good teams as they play hard each and every game.  With solid big man Carl manning the paint, 7LE was able to take advantage of the Titans and dominate the paint.  The game was down to the wire during the second half as Anil and Daniel kept attacking the basket.  The odd thing here is that the Titans had their full roster show up and came out on the losing end.  Weird to see them lose a game with so much talent...seems like they only win when they start the game with 4 guys.  But not to discredit 7LE, they have now won 2 in a row and are looking to round out the bottom half of the standings come playoff time.  This looks like a sleeper team and the Titans may have napped for too long.  7LE wins 68 - 63

RUKUS vs. Storm

In a day full of exciting games, none had more excitement going into it than this one.  But turned out this game was not as exciting as we thought it would be.  RUKUS continued their dominant ways as they pounded the paint.  Bear aka Fadi took full advantage of the undersized team and showed his talents.  RUKUS is a scary team because they have so much talent at literally every position.  Mike Bravo had another amazing outing and Storm was unable to provide any answer to his offensive prowess.  On the other side, Mike McDuffie from Storm keeps his stellar rookie season going but dropping a game high 43 points.  Catch the pre-game interview with Mike and Sim as they talk about their matchup with RUKUS and Mike's chances at locking up the Rookie of the Year award.  RUKUS wins big in another high scoring affair 100 - 82.

NYC Warriors vs. Astoria Bulls
Last game of the evening was a very entertaining game.  Astoria Bulls have yet to win a game and everyone thought they would be manhandled by rookie phenom Haron Hargrave and the NYC Warriors.  Haron dropped a game high 41 points and is showing that he is an unstoppable force in the SABL.  They came out on the winning side in this game, but it was definitely a close one. Bulls are showing some good flashes of talent with Greg and Enes in the paint.  The team still has to get their motions going and we should see some wins.  They have to step it up quick if they want to make the playoffs or they will be home fishing.  Warriors needed this win after dropping several in a row and are now back in the mix at the bottom of the pack.  Warriors win a good one 97 - 85

Player Spotlight

Rookie phenom, Haron Hargrave of NYC Warriors, now holds the record for most points scored in single game with his 56 point performance this past weekend against RUKUS. Although NYC Warriors came out on the losing end of this game in a nailbiter, Haron's efforts are worthy of this weeks player spotlight and is now in the SABL record books!

Week 5 Recaps

Hi Rizerz vs. Ballers
What people thought would be a blowout, ended up being one of the most exciting games of the season.  Call it what you want, but the Ballers came to play and knocked off Hi Rizerz to give them their official first loss of the season.  The game was tight from tip off as Sajeel and Manjot were getting to the basket and drawing foul after foul.  The MVP of this game for the Ballers was definitely Nadeem as he was able to knock down some clutch 3 pointers late in the second half to give the Ballers a confident lead.  Hi Rizerz on the other hand played a very good game but only managed to score 54 points on this punishing Ballers defense.  Perhaps they came out too confident?  Whatever it is, they came out on the losing end and confused as to how they let this one go.  Ballers got this much needed win as they dropped a few games in a row and needed this impressive win to get back on track.  Ballers win 61 - 54.

SWAT vs. Storm
This game looked to be one of the more compelling games of the week, but ended up getting lost in the mix.  SWAT was eager to take on a top team and inch their way back to the top, and to face none better than outstanding rookie Mike McDuffie and team Storm.  But to their dismay, Mike was missing in action and SWAT took full advantage.  The combo of Usama and Reyaad was too much to handle as SWAT was able to knock down 3 after 3.  Some defensive adjustments around Chris P. allowed SWAT to widen the gap.  Storm was able to make a late run and cut the lead down to 5 with less than 2 minutes left.  But SWAT mustered the energy to break down the defense and move on to a 10 point win.  Sloppy game for both sides, but the defending champs took advantage of this game to move up in the rankings.  Storm is still a force to be reckoned with.  SWAT wins 81 - 71.

Titans vs. Panthers
Similar to the SWAT vs. Storm matchup, this game had one of the more compelling storylines, but ended up in an utter defeat.  Titans, in good old Titans fashion, start the game with only 5 players compared to the army that makes up the Panthers.  But these Titans play their hearts out every week and they are certainly gelling at the right time.  If you have not heard of him yet, you must get familiar with Anil Chinnan right now.  The dude is flat out solid.  He has 2 games in a row of which he has scored 56 total points and has been averaging 11 boards through those 2 games.  He has personally taken it upon himself to carry this team to consecutive wins by large margins.  Throw in the sharp shooting of Tom Job and you have yourself an elite backcourt.  Panthers on the other hand show that they are very unpredictable and lose big against a familiar foe.  They need to get their act together and show more consistency if they want to make some late season noise.  Titans win big 73-59.

RUKUS vs. NYC Warriors
Hands down the game of the week and the highest scoring affair of the season.  To start, Haron Hargrave of the Warriors now holds the record for most points scored in a game with 56 point performance this past week.  To add to this record breaker, RUKUS now holds this season highest scoring game with 101 points!  The game showed how competitive this season has been with 2 very solid teams going at it.  RUKUS was keen on getting back on track after their loss versus HR last week and they were tested by the Warriors.  Mike Bravo again was unstoppable as he dominated the paint and the Warriors were unable to answer him.  The decided to take advantage of their elite backcourt led by Haron as he drained 12 three pointers for his game high.  An unbelievable game that went right down to the wire and a delight to watch for those who stayed in gym.  As the dust settled, and despite the stellar performance from Haron, RUKUS moves on as the victor.  RUKUS wins 101 - 97.

Astoria Bulls vs. 7th Letter Entertainment / Tic Tavern
Battle of the newbies vs the winless team.  Astoria Bulls are still trying to find their identity as they are were only 1 game in at this point, meanwhile 7th Letter suffered a few close defeats in very hardfought games.  This was going to be a statement game for both teams as they were both trying to get their first official SABL wins.  From tip off the game was controlled by 7th Letter as their interior play was just too much for the Bulls.  They showed some sloppy play at times but cleaned it up big time in the second half to jump out and hold a commanding lead.  The Bulls on the other hand looked confused and similar to how 7th letter looked a few weeks ago.  Perhaps with a few games under their belt they can show some character, but as of now they are still winless and yet still in contention for a playoff seed.  7th Letter wins 68 - 52.

Week 5 Recaps

Wolverines vs Red Jaguars

SABL history has shown that shown that one player usually cannot win a game by himself. With all due respect to the rest of the Wolverines, it seems that Alain Wehder never got the history lesson! The Wolverines had a full lineup show up, and it was Alain in particular who delivered an MVP performance. 38 points, 6 threes, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds later, the Red Jaguars walked off the court dazed and confused. Alain’s 38 points is a season-high for points in a game for the East so far this season. The Wolverines ran pick-and-roll after pick-and-roll and Alain seemed to heat up exponentially as the game progressed. Raja Bhatt contributed a solid game as well with 9 points, 8 rebounds for the Wolverines. The Red Jaguars were led by new-comer Neal George with a very respectable stat line of 19 points, 5 threes, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocks. The loss for the Red Jags puts into serious question who is the number two team in the East. The Wolverines win in a shocker, 73-63.

24/7 vs Outlawz

The SABL East game of the week had an asterisk early on as half of the 24/7 four-headed-monster was affected by attendance/injury. All-Stars Jeff Snipoglesby was a no-show to the game and defending-MVP Jon Roman fell early to injury. Still, 24/7 managed to take care of business without too much of a scare. MVP candidates Mohamed Elfatihi and Yassine Rhaffor dominated the game offensively with 32 points each. Both were extremely aggressive all game – Mohamed with his seven three pointers and drives to the hoop, Yassine with his aggressive moves drawing fouls and his rebounding and play-making. Their combined 64 points is more than most teams average per game! 24/7 scored an SABL East season-high 94 points (shattering their own 81 points from last week) and both teams traded basket after basket. Credit the Outlaws for fighting until the end despite superstar Tobin Varghese having a cold shooting afternoon. The Outlawz were led by Nikil Kumar whose timely threes and offensive rebounds kept the Outlawz within striking distance at times. In the end, 24/7 triumphed in an offensive showdown 94-84.

Primetime vs Desert Eagles

For stretches of the game, the Desert Eagles can simply dominate which is a testament to their versatility and ability to adjust to the game! Take the 2nd half of their game versus Primetime as an example. After falling behind in the first half, they outscored PT 49 to 23 by forcing turnover after turnover and catching on fire from the three-pointer line. Walid, Farhan, and Harvey equally stepped up their defensive presence and shot-making in the 2nd half. In addition Primetime was not able limit their mistakes and neutralize the DE scoring runs, possibly due to a DNP by Stanley who sat this one out. Primetime was lead by Khuram, Salman, and Niraj. When all was said and done, theDesert Eagles prevailed over Primetime, 76 – 55. Experts were utterly wrong in their predictions again confirming one this is for sure: the East conference is deep and any game can go any way on any given Sunday!

A-Team vs Force

Joe Fitt, Royce, and Rahul from Force had the tough task of containing the A-Team frontline and did well, combining for an impressive 27 rebounds. They limited the A-Team from controlling the offensive glass, which was key to winning the game. The A-Team’s offense was anemic managing only 46 points. On the flipside, the Force executed a balanced offense. They were paced by Joe with 14 points, 10 boards, 4 blocks; Biju Thomas with 13 points; Alex with 13 points, 6 boards, 4 assists; and Jones with 10 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds. That resulted in a 60-46 win for the Force. The question on everyone’s mind is what’s going on with the A-Team? Captain Muzz and company have a history of starting the season slow and finishing strong, but even this has to be alarming. 46 points against a mediocre defense is not acceptable. On the flipside, the Force are looking tough when their enforcer Joe Fitt playing. A matchup against Primetime next week will be a great barometer as to where they stand.
