In the opening game of the SABL Season 3 we had the Titans taking on MKA-NY. This game featured the debut of Rex Varughese in a Titans uniform. Rex didn’t disappoint as he had a monster game 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Titans won this game 83 to 74 over MKA-NY. The Titans led this game through out and at one point were up by 16 points before MKA-NY chipped away with some long range shots by Khurram Bajwa and Sakib Hashim. MKA-NY was led by Farhan Ahmad 23 points in his SABL debut. The Titans have also seemed to find another diamond in the rough in Tommy Job. Tommy showed off a wide array of offensive moves, hitting the mid range jumper with ease along with some long range shots from beyond the arc.
Our second game featured the Desert Eagles making their SABL debut vs another upstart team the Assassins. This game featured a lot of sloppy play with both teams having multiple players in the penalty. The young Assassins seemed to have the fresher legs as they won the game 60-55. The Desert Eagles showed some promise and have some certified stars with Harvey Harding and Hany Younis. Tom Clark and Adam Efilky provided all of the intangibles and a steady presence on the offense. The Assassins were led by Tim Ahmed who has a striking resemblance to long time SABL player Asad Baig. Rafeh had a tremendous all round game as he led the young Assassins with some inspirational play by scoring, blocking shots, playing tight defense and grabbing some big rebounds.
Dynasty and the HitMen the classic match up led off the third game of the SABL season. Dynasty came in with a completely revamped team. Gone are the Papaiya brothers, and they have been replaced with a talented and gritty team. This team features ex Humans star Yassine Ghafour, and newcomer Mohammed Khan. They also have one the tallest players in SABL history with Tim Crane. The HitMen have a completely revamped roster as well. They are led by the exciting Wigberto Clavialla aka Triggy and he didn’t disappoint with a wide array of long range shots and drives to the basket along with Aman Kakar who was able to dazzle with his midrange game but it wasn’t enough as the HitMen were beaten handily 63-44.
Gone are Force and in are the Ravens. In the last game of the day at Jamaica High School the Ravens took on the Panthers. The Ravens had many of the familiar faces from the Spartans and it seemed to do the trick for the Ravens in the first half. The Ravens played inspired basketball in the first half and looked like a cohesive unit. This was something that Force lacked last year. The Panthers not to be short changed brought in a starting unit with some serious height. This height may have caused the Ravens some trouble as the Ravens were unable to finish their shots in the paint. Panthers stayed with the Ravens in the first half being down by only 2 points at one point and by 4 at half time. Both teams weren’t able to convert from the charity stripe as this game featured one of the lowest half time totals 19-15 at half time. The Panthers were led the solid Ditar Singh who at times looked like he was the best player on the floor. Davinder Singh controlled the glass for the Panthers and was able to corral many of his teammates missed shots for second opportunities. Jimmy from the now defunct Money Crew was able to keep his team within striking distance. Both teams showed a lot of rust and began to foul even more incessantly and were bricking free throw after free throw. The Panthers with their young guns began to pull away in the second half and with both teams offense seemingly predicated on just drive and draw the foul, the Panthers seemed to miss the least as they won out 40 to 30 over the Ravens.
The first late game of opening night featured SWAT vs Strong Island, both of whom looked like legit contenders for the SABL title. Late pickup Sijo Jacob filled in admirabely on an already deep SWAT who was missing Davis Samuel but the star of the night on SWATs side was Tarek Yasin who displayed a truly all-around game. Viaing for the position as the "beast" of SABL, he displayed an uncanny ability to drive to the basket effectively, displayed a sound back to the basket game, and was a threat from beyond the arc. He threw in some blocks and dominated the glass for good measure. At times he single handidly kept a very talented SWAT team in the game and that is saying a lot about his skills. But that also says a lot about the makeup of Strong Island. Despite missing Lamba, a healthy rotation of Shaun, Raman, and newcomer Mark Pollard in the backcourt, Strong Island got up early, let SWAT chip away a bit late in the first half but were able to stay half a step ahead the rest of the game. It was a great back and forth matchup for the majority of the contest with Strong Island's duo of floor general Mark Pollard and Forward Richard Reyes helping them win the first 5 minutes and last 5 minutes of the game to ensure a 1-0 start. Final Score Strong Island 75 - SWAT 67
The last game of the night featured SABL champions Basketballers pinned against the new look HUMANS. It truly was last year's championship team as they were missing their new aquisition, MVP Abdullah, although they did have Suleman Tariq getting his opportunity right away to show the HUMANS why he should've been starting all of last season. HUMANS featured the same style of a deep team with Farhan patrolling the sidelines ensuring a steady rotation of fresh legs. As the game got underway, Ballers hit their shots and jumped out early in typical fiesty fashion with an aggresive zone led by Sajeel and Omair up top getting to the loose balls helping to maintain a lead in the first 7 minutes of the game. But as the HUMANS settled in, Saad began intercepting pass after pass which lead to many P.O.Ts, the bigs of Khurram, David, and Ahmad provided many second chance points against the undersized Basketballers front line. When buckets were needed, Muneeb provided timely scoring to pull ahead. The outside shooting from Talha kept the Ballers within striking distance for most of the 2nd half but HUMANS buckled down even more on defense and sealed the 67-53 victory. HUMANS, as many predicted, look like strong contenders. Basketballers gave off impressions of a middle of the pack team which doesn't bode well for the rest of the league because they have made it a habit to win championhips in SABL and SASL the last two seasons as a middle of the pack team.

Team Dynasty one of the toughest teams in Softball haven't had the same level of success in basketball. For two consecutive years Dynasty has been one of the bottom dwellers in the SABL. Captain Sonu Bhasin took over this team and said one simple phrase..."Never Again". Dynasty picked up Mohammed Khan from New Jersey a 6 foot bruiser who will man the middle. Added to the front line is ex HUMANS star Yassine Rahaffor, and just in case Triple Threat's Arfan Arif. This front line is going to make the no layup rule that the Knicks employed in the mid 90's seem soft. They also added ex Dream Teamer Sekander Yosofi for his outside shooting. They have added Burhan from the Lions Softball and Sajid Kakana returns with his tough nosed defense. Rounding out the roster are newcomers Manny, Jamie, and Hasim. One thing is for certain though, this is an all new Dynasty.
Team Roster
Sajid Kakana
Mohammed Khan
Manny
Burhan Gorgani
Yassine Rahaffor
Sonu Singh
Gaurav Bhasin
Arfan Arif
Sekander Yosofi

Friday, 24 October 2008 |
The SABL is proud to announce a sponsorship deal with
Sky Bounce, LLC for the current 2008/2009 basketball
season. The deal has allowed the league to reduce team
fees to be more in line with last season, without
having to sacrifice the many improvements planned for
this season (like clock-stoppage, refs & scorekeepers,
nicer jerseys, and quality facilities). Since 1979,
Sky Bounce has provided quality equipment for the
street-game enthusiast, including hand balls and stick
balls.
